Parenting is a challenging, yet rewarding task. You are faced with taking the life of a little human being and shaping and molding it for the greater good of humanity. When parents’ have a baby a sense of bliss bubbles inside them. A great journey begins full of love and compassion for the little one.

Be aware though, that your precious little bundle of joy will grow and will present you with behaviors or attitudes that are less than pleasing. You’ve got the “terrible twos”, the preteen who thinks she is 30, and the 16 year old who thinks he knows it all. Plenty of opportunities will come in which you can get frustrated and overwhelmed.

Parenting with a spiritual perspective

Spiritual parenting takes on parenting with a spiritual perspective. That two year old that just threw a handful of cheerios in your face is not inherently bad. He is simply acting out a frustration or maybe thinks it will be funny. Poor parenting might look like a parent slapping the kid alongside the head and yelling at him. Spiritual parenting will handle the matter in a more peaceful way. You could take a deep breath and then calmly talk to the child about the inappropriate behavior. You could find out why the child did it. Maybe he simply wanted your attention because you were so busy with other things.

Have realistic expactations

Spiritual parenting involves having realistic expectations of children. They are not and never will be perfect. They will make mistakes, be defiant, have attitude, get lazy, and a host of other things that could be cause for you to “lose it”. Take heart and realize that they are human, and no matter what they do, they are worthy of unconditional love.

Learning from mistakes and from others is a great way to adhere to spiritual parenting. You can also read books by spiritual people who offer sound advice for parents. Being able to know what to expect before it happens will certainly help your parenting skills.

Be confident

Be confident that you can be a positive, spiritual influence on your children. Your attitude will have an effect on your children, so you want to be sure it is a good attitude. Of course you will have moments in which you may get frustrated and yell at your children. It happens to the even the best parents. Simply apologize if you feel you were inappropriate and ask for forgiveness. This teaches your children that mistakes happen, but reconciliation also happens.

Spiritual parenting is a journey that ought to be enjoyed along the way by you and your children. Make the best of it!
