Summary of “Mastering the Art of Gratitude” from Oprah Lifeclass

Here’s what our greatest spiritual life coaches have to say about “gratitude”:

Iyanla Vanzant on Gratitude

One way to connect to gratitude is to pay attention to how you respond to life experiences that causes pain. As you experience unpleasant life experiences that causes pain inside you, remember the following acronym: PAIN – Pay Attention Inward Now. Understand that life is going to “stop” in different places, and be grateful for every “stop” along the way. Life will “stop” in grief, sorrow, sadness, excitement, enthusiasm etc. and each stop will teach us something that we need to know for getting to the ultimate end to the journey. So, pay attention to how you respond to the “stop, and be grateful for each “stop” along the way and. It’s all about the way you tell your story. You can tell the “victim-story” (how your partner left you, how unfair life is etc.) or you can tell the story were you have been given the opportunity to learn something from the experience (how you learned something about yourself and that this experience has helped you to clarify the direction you wish to take now in your life).

Tony Robbins on Gratitude

Gratitude is the most important emotional of all. Gratitude is the antidote to the two things that stop us which are fear and anger. Fear is why we don’t take action and anger is why we get stuck. You can’t be grateful and fearful/angry at the same time. Gratitude is the “reset” button; the cleanser of the soul. When you are grateful it’s no longer about me, but about giving, and “you” (the ego) disappear. When you disappear, you reconnect to the divine.

Bishop T. D. Jakes on Gratitude

Recognize that every breath you take, everyday that you can move your body, everything you can see or touch or feel etc. is a gift. You have been given a gift by God that is greater than you. Wherever there is appreciation, there will be duplication.

Deepak Chopra on Gratitude

Gratitude opens the door to abundance consciousness, because it gets you to the source of all things. You have the realization, through gratitude, that the inner intelligence inside you is the supreme genius that mirrors the wisdom of the universe. You open up the door to the greater power, creativity, and wisdom when you are in a state of gratitude.

Heal your life with a “Gratitude Journal”

Gratitude is the ultimate spiritual solution. Gratitude can heal heartache and pain. It can change your consciousness and allow you to see your life as a gift. If you want to master the Art of Gratitude, Oprah recommends you to start a “gratitude journal” where you write down 5 things that you are grateful for, every day. She explains that it is important to write down the things you are grateful for, because there is power behind the words. It can be simple things, like appreciating: a nice walk, the smell of fresh flowers, a nice bath, laughing with a friend, enjoying a wonderful dinner etc. Make it a habit to wake up in the morning and consciously look for thing to appreciate. This habit will make you more alive and receptive to the goodness and wonderful things that comes into your life. Notice the little things like someone holding the door for you.

To Be Grateful Is Enough

Oprah explains that if you focus on what you don’t have, you will never ever have enough. If you want to change the state of being, start with being grateful. When you allow yourself feeling gratitude in the present moment; in the now, the spiritual dimension of you life will expand, and you will grow with it. Oprah believes that if you are thankful for what you have, you will always end up with more. If the only prayer you say is “thank you”, that will be enough. Try and say “thank you” as often as you can and notice the shift that will start to happen; within you and around you.
